Preparing for a care conversation

  • Write down routines that are going well and tasks that feel harder.
  • Ask your loved one what support would feel useful and comfortable.
  • Note preferred visit times, household routines, and who should join the conversation.
  • Prepare questions about costs, services, availability, and next steps.

Questions to ask a care provider

  • Which services do you offer, and which tasks are outside your scope?
  • How do you screen, prepare, and supervise caregivers?
  • How do you handle scheduling changes, missed visits, and backup coverage?
  • What are your fees, minimum visits, and cancellation terms?
  • How will our family share feedback?

Making space for everyone

  • Include the person receiving care in decisions wherever possible.
  • Agree who will be the main contact and how updates should be shared.
  • Discuss responsibilities, including scheduling and payment.
  • Plan a time to revisit arrangements and ask how support is feeling.
